Two months in. Still no ads. Still no algorithm. Just a question going out at 9pm and people deciding whether to show up.
We didn't go viral.
We didn't wake up to thousands of users. There was no moment where the numbers jumped and we had to figure out what to do with the attention. Most days it was the same names showing up. The same few people answering the question at the end of the night.
Circle is still in its infancy. But there is something to be said about how it is moving through the world.
We haven't optimized for growth. We haven't allocated a huge marketing budget. Honestly, we barely even tell our friends about it. Yet, slowly, something has shifted. During the initial weeks, new people would come. They would leave.
Something in the last few weeks has clicked. New names come and don't just go. They come and they stay.
Something Shifted
Every night that 9pm approached I used to tell myself: this is the night no one shows up. This is the night Circle dies.
I can't tell you what night it happened. But one night I blinked. 9pm hit. Rather than fizzling out, eight people were waiting on Circle. Answering within the first five minutes the question went live.
That moment. Where you realize you've built something that people actually like. It was special. I can't say I don't have my doubts about whether Circle will continue to last, but what I can say is people are showing up again and again. And the focus is slowly shifting from "how can we ensure people like this" to "how can we make the space better for the people already showing up."
The Data
Looking at the metrics, I see slow growth. I see a 59% activation rate, which means nearly half of everyone who signs up never posts once. I see a small community by any traditional measure.
But I also see a campfire growing hotter.
1,314 posts across 69 active days. Not one dead day since relaunch. Average likes per post climbed from 4.4 in early March to 8.8 in late April, a 2x increase in engagement depth with roughly the same number of people in the room. The community is not growing louder. It is growing closer.
Week-over-week retention has averaged 84.8% since relaunch. The last three weeks came in at 89%, 91%, and 92%. For a social product with no algorithm, no incentive campaign, and no push to stay, those numbers say one thing: the room is worth returning to.
On May 1st, we asked: What is one thing about yourself you used to be ashamed of that you have made peace with?
Thirty-one people answered. That is the highest single-night total in two months. Not a music question. Not a lighthearted prompt. The most vulnerable question we have asked, and the most people we have ever had show up for one.
The people that do show up, show up authentically and ready to connect. They come with the intention of being present, not performing.
The additions of GIFs and pictures in comments have been fueling that as well. Lowering the barrier to initiating a conversation. Making it easier to respond to what someone said without having to find the perfect words first.
What Circle Actually Is
Circle is for someone who doesn't feel seen on traditional social media. For someone who wants to participate in something real. Circle is not for someone looking to broadcast.
We understand that means Circle isn't for everyone. We are okay with that.
It is obvious there is a space for Circle in the world. Not a massive one, necessarily. A real one. A space on the internet built for presence over performance.
What We're Learning
Vulnerability wins
The questions are the product. We have said this before, but two months in, it is more apparent than ever.
There are questions we put out expecting people to shy away from, questions that ask for something raw and unguarded. Those are the questions people show up for the most.
In our minds it is counterintuitive. But it tells us we built the right thing. Not just the app, but the right vehicle to inspire this connection. The questions that pull the lowest response counts leave too much open, asking people to locate a feeling before they can even answer. The questions that pull the most trust the person to meet them there.
"What song do you put on when you need to get out of your own head?" Twenty-seven answers.
"What is one thing about yourself you used to be ashamed of that you have made peace with?" Thirty-one.
The pattern is clear. When the gate is open, people walk through it.
Habit beats hype
While it would be nice to set consistent "most posts in a night" records, it almost means more when the same core shows up night after night.
Two users have posted every single active day since launch. Sixty-nine days. Not a streak they are protecting for a badge. They were already doing it before any of that existed. That consistency is what gives us confidence in what we've built.
Circle doesn't need people looking for trends or novelty. It needs people looking to be present.
That word: present. It shows up again and again because it is what Circle is. Presence. It is about cracking open a new album and clearing your schedule to actually hear it. Every kick, every trumpet. The same way you give that album your full attention is the same energy that fills Circle at 9pm.
Small group, strong culture
Culture is not about more people. It is about the right people.
Like building a good team, you need your foundation before you can build anything lasting on top of it. A dozen people who show up with real intention will always create something worth staying for. A thousand people who barely glance at it will leave nothing behind.
We have the foundation. That is not a consolation. That is everything.
Slow Is Not Broken
There is a story you can tell about Circle where the numbers look modest and the conclusion is that something isn't working. Activation under 60%. Fewer than 50 active users in any given week. No viral moment. No hockey stick.
That story is available, and it is not the full picture.
The people who don't stick are telling us something too. Circle asks for something real. Every question is a small invitation to say something honest, something considered, something that actually reflects where you are. Not everyone is ready for that. Not everyone wants it. The people who leave after signing up aren't failing Circle. Circle is filtering for the people it was built for.
That isn't a flaw in the design. It is the design.
When 91% of active users come back the following week without any incentive to do so, the product is doing its job. The question is not why half of signups don't post. The question is why 9 out of 10 people who do post keep coming back. That is the number worth understanding.
Slow growth here is not a failure to scale. It is a filter working correctly.
This Isn't Our Space
Something has happened over these two months that I didn't fully anticipate.
Circle stopped feeling like mine.
Not in a way that feels like loss. In a way that feels like the point. The people who show up every night have shaped this space in ways no product decision ever could. The questions that land the hardest come from understanding what this community is willing to say. The features that matter most are the ones that get out of the way and let people connect.
We are not forcing behavior. We are observing it. Learning from it. Slowly shaping the container so what is already growing inside it has more room.
The community poll is the clearest proof of this. Every week, users submit the questions they want asked. They vote on what comes next. Several of the highest-response questions over the past two months didn't come from us. They came from the community itself. Questions about family, second chances, shame, music identity. Written by the people in the room, for the people in the room.
This space belongs to the people in it. Our job is to keep it worthy of them.
What Makes Circle Different
Most social apps are built around the same assumptions. More content is better. More users is better. More time in the app is better. The goal is volume: posts, views, sessions per day.
Circle is built around a different question: what if one honest moment per day, shared with people who are actually paying attention, is worth more than a hundred passive scrolls?
Most apps optimize for scale. Circle optimizes for reflection. Most apps optimize for consumption. Circle optimizes for presence.
Traditional social media hands you an audience. It asks you to perform for it. The reward is visibility. The feedback loop pushes you toward whatever gets the most reaction, and the most reaction usually goes to whatever is loudest or most extreme.
Circle hands you a question. It asks you to answer it honestly. The reward is not visibility. It is connection. One person recognizing something true in what you wrote. One comment that says you were heard.
You cannot game that. You cannot optimize your way into it. You either show up or you don't, and if you do, you get to be in a room with other people who did the same.
The Nights Matter
I keep coming back to 9pm.
Not the number. The feeling. The fact that somewhere out there, right now, people are finishing their day and opening an app that asks them something real. And then they answer it. And then they pick the song that fits.
That's it. That's the whole thing. And it keeps happening.
We're two months in. We have 1,314 posts from people who showed up when they didn't have to, answered honestly when they could have lurked, and came back the next night when the world gave them plenty of reasons not to.
On May 1st, 31 people told us something they used to be ashamed of that they have made peace with. That is not a content metric. That is a room of people deciding together that this is a safe place to be honest.
If Circle ended today, I would be proud of what was built here. But it is not ending.
This isn't about how fast we grow.
It's about what happens when people decide to stay.
